Quality Assurance - The Learning Environment
We take great pride in the services we offer to children and families. Providing quality programs is important to us. We continually evaluate ourselves to be sure we are maintaining best early childhood practices, quality standards and providing a safe and healthful environment. A learning environment assessment is used to measure program quality, set improvement plans and evaluate staff performance. We've chosen two internationally recognized tools, each developed at the Frank Porter Graham Child Institute of the University of North Carolina by Thelma Harms, Richard Clifford and Debby Cryer:
The Infant and Toddler Environment Rating Scale™ (ITERS-R)
The Early Childhood Environment Rating Scale™ (ECERS-R)
Each scale consists of about 40 terms that are scored from 1 to 7 with a score of 7 being highest. Programs are assessed for quality in broad categories:
► SPACE and FURNISHINGS
► PERSONAL CARE ROUTINE
► LANGUAGE and REASONING
► TEACHER - CHILD INTERACTION
► PROGRAM STRUCTURE
► PARENTS and STAFF
These tools also form the basis of many state and national evaluations. Particularly, in the State of Colorado, the QUALISTAR program rates child care programs using these tools.
